There are many types of landscape edging.
Plastic. Composite. Steel. Aluminum. Concrete. Brick. Stone. Wood. And systems described as no-dig or pound-in.
They may all be called landscape edging, but they are not designed to do the same job.
That is why choosing edging should not begin with:
"Which type of landscape edging is best?"
A better question is:
"What does the edging need to do?"
An edge around mulch may need different characteristics from one used to contain decorative stone.
What Is Landscape Edging and What Does It Do?
Landscape edging creates a defined boundary between areas such as turf, mulch, decorative stone, walkways, or planting beds.
It can help contain material, define the shape of a bed, and affect how the area is mowed and maintained.
Some edging stays low and nearly hidden. Other systems, such as brick, stone, concrete, or timbers, become part of the landscape design.
Edging is not a perfect barrier. Material, grass, or roots can still cross a boundary depending on the product, installation, and conditions.
A clean-cut natural edge can also work in some landscapes without manufactured edging.
Do You Always Need Landscape Edging?
No.
A maintained natural edge may be enough in some situations.
Manufactured edging may make more sense when stronger separation, a more defined appearance, or easier boundary maintenance is wanted.
What Types of Landscape Edging Are Available?
Most residential edging falls into a few broad material groups.
Products within the same category can still differ in height, thickness, strength, flexibility, anchoring, and intended use.
Terms such as "no-dig" and "pound-in" generally describe how an edging system is installed rather than what material it is made from.

Plastic and Composite Edging
Plastic and composite edging may be flexible or relatively rigid.
Depending on the product, it can work well for curves, low-profile borders, and general landscape-bed separation.
Compare the product's construction, height, anchoring, and intended use rather than relying only on the words plastic or composite.
Metal Edging
Metal edging commonly includes steel and aluminum.
It can create a narrow, clean border and may work for straight lines, curves, or both depending on the design.
Look at the product's stiffness, anchoring, finish, and exposed height.
Concrete, Brick, Paver, and Stone Edging
These materials create a more substantial and usually more visible border.
They may make sense when the edging itself is intended to become part of the landscape design.
They also generally require more preparation than thin, staked edging.
Ordinary landscape edging is not intended to replace a retaining system where significant grade or structural support is involved.
Wood and Landscape Timbers
Wood can create a natural-looking and substantial border.
It is often well suited to straight or relatively simple layouts.
Consider whether the material is suitable for outdoor or ground-contact use and how moisture, fastening, and eventual replacement may affect the installation.
Shape and Height Matter
Flexible edging is generally easier to use for curves and irregular shapes.
Rigid edging is often better suited to straight runs, corners, or places where movement needs to be limited.
Flexible does not automatically mean weak, and rigid does not automatically mean better.
A raised edge can provide more above-ground containment but may require more trimming. A low-profile edge may make mowing easier but provides less containment above the surface.
Ask:
What does the edging need to contain?
How will the other side be maintained?

The Material, Edging Size, and Installation Need to Work Together
The material being contained, the usable height of the edging, and the installation all need to work together.
Decorative stone is heavier than mulch and does not break down over time. Mulch is lighter but is replenished as it settles and decomposes.
In either case, consider the planned material depth in relation to the usable height of the edging. An edge that sits too low may not effectively contain several inches of rock or mulch.
Anchoring and grade also matter, and the product should be installed as designed. In Florida, sandy soil, heavy rain, and strong sun can also affect how an edging system performs.
Before digging or driving anchors into the ground, consider irrigation and buried utilities.

What Should You Look for When Buying Landscape Edging?
Once you know what the edging needs to do, ask:
- Is it tall and substantial enough?
- Is it flexible or rigid enough for the layout?
- How is it anchored and connected?
- Is it designed for the material and application?
These questions tell you more than a broad label such as metal, plastic, or heavy duty.
