What Homeowners Should Know Before Delivery
You know where you want the material.
The driveway is wide enough. There appears to be plenty of room for the delivery equipment. Maybe other large vehicles have used the driveway before.
So why might a landscape-material supplier ask where the material will be dumped, what surface the equipment must cross, whether it has to turn or back, and whether there are sidewalks, drainage structures, trees, or overhead wires?
Because fitting the equipment onto the property is only one part of planning a bulk-material delivery.
A heavily loaded commercial delivery vehicle can weigh tens of thousands of pounds. Depending on the vehicle, configuration, and material, some commercial vehicles can approach 80,000 pounds loaded.
That does not mean every delivery vehicle weighs 80,000 pounds or that a particular driveway cannot support one.
The practical question is whether the driveway, access route, and requested placement are appropriate for the particular loaded equipment.
A driveway that looks strong enough—or has successfully carried ordinary vehicles—does not by itself establish that it is suitable for a heavily loaded commercial delivery vehicle.
What You See at the Surface Doesn't Tell You Everything
Residential driveways are built from different materials and with different underlying construction and support.
With concrete, thickness, underlying support, cracks, joints, edges, repairs, and deterioration can matter.
With asphalt, age, condition, underlying support, and existing deformation can matter. Newer or heat-softened asphalt may also be more susceptible to indentation or deformation under concentrated heavy loading.
Paver driveways depend not only on the visible pavers but also on the base beneath them, settlement, edge restraint, and existing movement.
Gravel and other aggregate surfaces can vary in depth, compaction, underlying support, rutting, and conditions along their edges and transitions.
Looking at the surface does not reveal everything about what is supporting it or what heavy loading it can accommodate.

A loaded commercial delivery vehicle also creates a substantially different loading condition from everyday residential traffic. Its weight reaches the driveway through its axles, wheels, and tires rather than being spread uniformly over the entire surface.
That is why years of successful use by cars, SUVs, and pickups cannot answer the question by themselves.
Access Means More Than Whether the Equipment Fits
Delivery access begins at the road, not at the driveway.
A quiet residential street and a busy multilane highway can present very different access conditions. Traffic volume and speed, sight distance, lane configuration, and the turning movement required to enter and leave can all matter.
The surrounding maneuvering area matters too. A large loaded vehicle may need room in the roadway to establish the angle required to enter or back into the property. Utility poles, mailboxes, drainage ditches or swales, culverts, trees, walls, gates, decorative columns, parked vehicles, and other obstructions beside the driveway, along the road, or even across the road can restrict that movement.
A narrow residential street can therefore present an access constraint even when traffic is light.

The type of delivery equipment also matters. Some bulk deliveries use a self-contained dump truck. Others may use a towing vehicle with a dump trailer.
A truck-and-dump-trailer combination can require additional room to turn, straighten, back, and position. The towing vehicle and trailer follow different paths during turning and backing, and portions of the combination may be difficult for the driver to see.

Once on the property, the route may involve sidewalks, driveway aprons, culverts, drainage structures, pavers, or other constructed features. Septic components, irrigation, utilities, and other improvements may also be concealed from the driver.
A requested placement that requires heavily loaded equipment to leave an appropriate hard surface and travel onto grass, soil, an unpaved shoulder, or other unsupported ground creates additional concerns. Loaded wheels may place weight near a pavement edge, while the adjoining ground may provide uncertain support. Equipment can sink, lose traction, become stuck, and require recovery.

The practical question is not simply:
"Can the equipment fit?"
It is:
"What does the truck or truck-and-trailer combination have to do to enter, maneuver, unload, and leave?"
"Can It Drive There?" and "Can It Safely Dump There?" Are Different Questions
A delivery vehicle may be able to drive to a location without that location being appropriate for unloading.
A dump operation requires enough room to position the equipment, an appropriate operating surface, and sufficient clearance around and above it. Slope and uneven conditions can also matter.
Overhead space becomes especially important when a dump body or dump trailer rises. Power lines, electrical service lines, tree branches, roof overhangs, and other obstacles that are not a problem while the equipment is traveling may become important during unloading.
Material also moves as it is discharged, so equipment actively dumping is in a different operating condition from equipment simply traveling across the property.

Why Does the Delivery Company Ask So Many Questions?
Delivery questions are part of delivery planning.
Advance planning helps protect the customer and property owner, the driver, the delivery equipment, and the delivery company.
A poor access or placement decision can result in pavement or other property damage, stuck equipment, towing or recovery, lost operating time, disruption of later deliveries, and disputes over damage, responsibility, or recovery expense.
The best time to resolve an access or placement problem is before a loaded delivery vehicle is already on the property.

"Another Company Delivered Here and Didn't Ask All These Questions"
Another supplier may use different equipment, loads, procedures, routes, placement practices, or risk tolerances. A previous successful delivery—or fewer questions from another company—does not mean the delivery being planned now presents the same situation.
If the Requested Placement Does Not Work
A concern about one requested placement does not necessarily mean the delivery itself cannot happen.
Another accessible, appropriate hard-surface location may avoid a questionable part of the route. The material can then be moved the remaining distance using a wheelbarrow, cart, loader, or other suitable equipment.

Can a Fully Loaded Delivery Vehicle Drive on Your Driveway?
Possibly.
Suitability depends on the particular driveway, access, delivery equipment, and unloading operation.
